Thrifting for beginners
One question I get all of the time is how to start thrifting, I have good news for you! All you have to do is walk in the door! Ok ok there are a few more steps you can take to make it even easier and I am going to break it down here for you. Take a scroll and go get your thrift on!
The first thing I would tell you is don't get over whelmed! Walking into a thrift store can feel a little like walking into a room full of people you have met once and you have no idea who you should talk to first. The thing is you can navigate this how ever you want! Start where you feel most excited and let the racks lead you from there. Take your time and let the scrolling through racks meditate you into shopping bliss.
Don't pass up on the mens section! This one is for the ladies and I can not stress it enough! Most of my favorite finds have come from the dudes side. Are we shocked the men get most of the good stuff? I'm definitely not. This is great mostly when you are looking for denim, sweaters, jackets and tshirts. So basically everything! Pretty much anytime a thrift store gets any athletic wear they immediately put it in the mes section so there are lots of scores to be found.
On that last note I would say don't skip any sections! I have found some amazing gems in the fly over sections. Pajama section? I found a 100% silk slip. Swim? Super flattering bikin! The first one I ever bought actually. Records? Brand new in the packing Queen album. There are so so so many hidden things to be found and those are always the most fun.
TRY. EVERYTHING. ON. This is a biggy. I can't tell you how many times I have eye balled something on the rack and assumed it would work and then brought it home and it was a disaster. A lot of the clothes are vintage or brandless so it's hard to have a gauge on how they are going to fit. Try it all on! No this isn't weird and it isn't gross.
Have fun with it! I think my favorite part of thrifting is there are no rules. I feel like trends matter less within the walls of a thrift store and that feels freeing! Try new things, Experiment with color. Buy weird art. You really get to be whoever the hell you want to be and us weirdos always feel a little more at home in a thrift shop.
